PETALING JAYA: Beautiful people, lavish setting, exquisite fashion. Crazy Rich Asians is all about glamour – with one Malaysian jewellery firm lending a hand in its opulence.

Designs by Mandalay can be seen making a cameo in the Hollywood film, worn by none other than Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh.

They comprise a brooch and earrings set made from jadeite and encrusted with diamonds, while pearl earrings from sister brand Rafflesia also made an appearance.

According to company director Winnie Sin, Yeoh personally selected the pieces.

The actress has worn some of their designs before at the Cannes Film Festival.

“Michelle Yeoh really loves jadeite and knows of our brands, and not just this one film too,” said Winnie.

“She has worn some of our designs in other films she acted in previously.”

Marketing manager Sin Hui Cin, Winnie’s daughter, said: “While filming Crazy Rich Asians in Malaysia, we got a call from her personal assistant.

“They wanted to know whether we could bring some of our jewellery over.

“We are very proud to see our Mandalay pieces on screen. The brooch is valued at RM1.38mil, and the earrings, RM498,000.

“The Rafflesia pearl earrings are from Michelle Yeoh’s own collection.”

Crazy Rich Asians, based on the novel by Kevin Kwan, tells the story of an Asian American woman who meets her boyfriend’s family in Singapore for the first time, where she learns about their rich background.

It stars Yeoh as well as Malaysian actor Henry Golding.

A number of the scenes were filmed in Malaysia, namely in locations around Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Penang.

“It’s an honour to represent Malaysia. It’s the best National Day ‘gift’ for our company.

“We’re also thankful to Michelle Yeoh for supporting a local jewellery company,” Winnie said.
