ALOR SETAR: The state Pakatan Harapan government will win with a much bigger victory if a fresh state election is held, says Kedah Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir (pic).
“From statements made by leaders of Opposition parties such as PAS and Umno, as well as those from Pakatan itself, all of them had admitted that there is a possibility for a state election to be held.
“However, most of them have also voiced out to prevent that from happening.
“As all are aware, the cost (to hold a state election) is huge and I believe everybody is still tired from the recent general election.
“However, if the state election has to be held, Pakatan Harapan is ready to face any possibility and we will make sure that the biggest victory will be in our favour,” said the Kedah Pakatan chairman.
Mukhriz was speaking to reporters after chairing a state exco meeting at Wisma Darul Aman here yesterday.
On the appointment of the state assembly Speaker, Mukhriz said they were in the process of negotiating with a few Opposition assemblymen.
“So far the response has been positive.
“I am confident that the process of appointing a Speaker will be carried out without any problems on July 4, where we will be having our state legislative assembly meeting,” he said.
In the 14th General Election, Pakatan Harapan won 18 of the 36 state seats in Kedah while PAS secured 15 and Barisan Nasional, three.
Kedah has yet to reach an agreement over the appointment of a state Speaker due to the composition of seats between Pakatan and the Opposition parties in the state.
On a separate issue concerning the logging activities in Ulu Muda, Mukhriz said the state government paid serious attention to the matter as it was related to water supply to Penang and Perlis.
“So far, the state Forestry Department had submitted reports to the state government that no logging activities were carried out at the water catchment area around Ulu Muda.
“Only selective logging activities were carried out at permitted areas,” he said, adding that the state government would continue to monitor the logging activities.
