KUALA LUMPUR: The lawyer of the family of murdered Mongolian model Altantuya Shaariibuu is hoping the Government would consider a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into the case.
Ramkarpal Singh (pic) said that the scope of an RCI could be a narrow one - on who ordered the murder of Altantuya.
"This can lead to a subsequent charge if those assailants or culprits are found in the RCI proceedings," he told a press conference on Tuesday (June 19).
He said that a possibility of this would be discussed with the Attorney General Tommy Thomas during a meeting at 3pm Tuesday (June 19) in Putrajaya.
Altantuya's father, Dr Setev Shaariibuu is in Malaysia to meet Tommy and is also scheduled to meet Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad on Wednesday (June 20).
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun had said last month that the police had not found any grounds to reopen investigations into the case.
Altantuya, 28, is believed to have been shot dead before her body was blown to bits with explosives at a secondary forest near the Subang Dam in Puncak Alam, Shah Alam in 2006.
In 2009, Sirul Azhar Umar and accomplice Azilah Hadri were convicted of murdering Altantuya and were sentenced to death.
The Court of Appeal overturned their sentences in 2013, but upon the prosecution's appeal, were upheld by the Federal Court.
Sirul fled to Australia, where he was detained by Australian Immigration after Interpol issued a red notice on him.
He has been at the detention centre since 2015, where he is hoping to get asylum.
Ramkarpal, however, said that Sirul was not crucial at all or necessary to a possible re-opening of the Altantuya murder investigation, as there is other evidence available from the criminal proceedings itself.
"Crucial witnesses were not called in those proceedings that can shed life into question of motive, as to who ordered the murder.
"People are under the wrong impression that we need him here. It is certainly not the case," he added.
