KUCHING: Sarawak has launched a 24-year Net Zero 2050 Strategy and Carbon Plan aimed at establishing the state as a regional low-carbon energy and industrial hub.
Unveiled by Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg on Friday night (Nov 6), the roadmap targets a 35% reduction in carbon emissions, RM347bil in green investments, and the creation of approximately 223,000 jobs.
Developed by the state Energy and Environmental Sustainability Ministry, the strategy outlines 15 strategic priorities across eight key emitting sectors, including energy, industry, transport, building, and waste, supported by seven cross-cutting enablers.
Abang Johari said that the plan will not halt development, but will balance economic growth with environmental preservation to maintain net negative emissions by 2050.
“Our approach is to grow responsibly, industrially, sustainably and develop our natural resources while preserving the value for our future generation,” he said.
The initiative leverages Sarawak's natural carbon sinks, such as forests, peatlands, and mangroves, alongside digital technology and carbon trading, with three public sector licenses already issued.
On carbon trading, he said the Sarawak government has issued three public-sector licenses.
