PETALING JAYA: Police have arrested a 36-year-old woman to assist in investigations into a fatal highway crash that killed a retired police sergeant and his wife on Friday (Nov 6).
According to Sinar Harian, Kuala Muda District Police chief Asst Comm Hanyan Ramlan said the woman, who owns the Perodua Bezza involved in the crash, was detained to help clarify the sequence of events leading up to the collision.
The accident occurred around 12.00pm at KM114.4 of the North-South Expressway. Retired sergeant Suhaimi Saidin, 64, and his wife Normah Hashim, 60, both sustained severe head and body injuries and died at the scene. They were returning home to Bandar Utama when the incident happened.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the couple’s Yamaha XMAX scooter, alongside another motorcycle, collided with the Perodua Bezza as it pulled out from the emergency lane into the left lane following a driver swap.
Two teenagers riding the second motorcycle sustained injuries and were rushed to Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital for treatment.
"Initial information indicates that the vehicle had stopped and moved again after switching drivers," ACP Hanyan stated. "We are investigating whether she was driving or was a passenger at the time of the impact. The arrest is necessary to facilitate further inquiries."
Police have appealed to any eyewitnesses or motorists with dashcam footage of the incident to come forward and share their recordings to aid the probe.
The case is currently being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
