PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong hopes that his innocence will be proven in court following an election petition filed by DAP's Liew Chin Tong to dispute the GE14 results for the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat.
Dr Wee said he respects Liew's rights to challenge the election results, adding that he will defend himself in court in accordance with the legal process.
"Late into the night of May 9, Liew rang me up to concede defeat and congratulate me. I told him then that I was not happy as many of my comrades in Barisan Nasional and MCA had lost," said Wee.
Wee added that he hopes the legal suit will prove his innocence yet again.
"As for Liew's actual basis for the legal challenge, my lawyer and I can only respond with more details after we have received the documents concerned," he said in a statement posted on Facebook on Tuesday (June 12).
Liew was defeated by Dr Wee with a slim majority of 303 votes.
In May, Liew had posted on his Facebook that he was collecting evidence of threats and money politics which he claimed had affected the election result.
Dr Wee garnered 17,076 votes against the 16,773 votes obtained by Liew. A third candidate, Mardi Marwan of PAS, had 4,975 votes.
Dissatisfied candidates can file election petitions 21 days after the official results of the election are gazetted.
The GE14 results were gazetted on May 28, which means that the last day for Liew to file his petition is on June 18.
