SPAD: Malaysia to have tram services soon

KUALA LUMPUR: The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) is looking at implementing a tram system in Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Kajang and Bangi for a more efficient transport solution and better connectivity for Malaysians.  

Its chief executive officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Shah said the proposed 53km network would be linked to the MRT 1 line in Kajang and the upcoming MRT 2 and High Speed Rail (HSR) lines.  

"We have submitted this to the Government and it has given us approval to initiate a request for proposal (RFP) exercise.  

"We've not decided when the RFP will be ready, but it will be within the next three to six months.  

"SPAD has conducted the feasibility studies, we know the network and the areas to cover," he told reporters during the presentation of the Land Public Transport Progress Report 2017 here Tuesday (March 6).  

Mohd Azharuddin added that the tram system would help to alleviate congestion in the four areas.  

He said tram services are viewed as cost-efficient and environment-friendly, which makes it the best option.
