KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has announced a RM3mil grant for the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP)-Hospital Selayang Cataract Surgery Centre.

The Prime Minister said that besides helping needy patients, the centre would also be able to buy new equipment.

“I’m very impressed with the services offered here, with about 30 patients receiving good treatment daily,” he said during a visit to the centre yesterday.

Cataract surgery is offered for as low as RM103 at the centre located in Sri Utara, Off Jalan Ipoh, here.

The centre, which is operated by the council with cooperation from the hospital, serves patients of all races and faiths.

Najib, who was accompanied by Health Ministry director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, said the centre should give equal treatment to non-Muslim patients as he wanted all Malaysians to benefit from its facilities.

Dr Noor Hisham said the centre had treated a total of 12,100 patients so far since it was set up in 2013.

“While patients only pay RM103 for surgery, the poor are treated for free.

“This is against the minimum cost of RM3,000 if treatment is done at a private eye clinic or hospital,” said Dr Noor Hisham. — Bernama
