Nazri ‘pleased’ that justice has been served

PETALING JAYA: Former de facto Law Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz (pic) is “very pleased and happy” with the landmark decision by the Federal Court in the Indira Gandhi case.

Nazri, who is Tourism and Culture Minister, said he has always maintained that the word “parent” means both the mother and father in the English language.

“So to me, I am very happy, but I feel sorry for Indira that it took almost 10 years just to decide on something which is simple and obvious.

“It is the right decision and justice has been served.

“As a Muslim, I think the decision is correct because in Islam, when there is no justice, then it is not Islamic at all,” he said when contacted after the apex court decision nullifying the unilateral conversion of Indira’s three children by her ex-husband.

He added that the decision by the apex Court has set a precedent as it is the highest decision-making judiciary body in the country.

When asked about the effect of the decision, Nazri said that “by logic”, cases that involve unilateral conversion may be called into question.

“Logically, and for the sake of justice, old cases must be looked at again.

“Whatever cases (were) decided on the basis of a parent – meaning either one – must follow this new decision. Automatically.

“This is my opinion.

“Once you decide this is law, that means the past cases were decided on the wrong premise and (people) can bring it back for a review,” he added.
