Older units may be fire hazards, says Fire Dept

PETALING JAYA: While new People’s Housing Projects (PPR) pass fire safety requirements, the older developments could be potential fire hazards.

Fire and Rescue Department director-general Datuk Wan Mohd Nor Ibrahim said new PPRs met the requirements for fire safety and adhere to the regulations.

“However, the older ones are a different matter altogether, given the deteriorating conditions of the buildings,” he said when contacted.

He said one of the contributing factors might be a lack of maintenance.

“The residents might have not maintained the cleanliness and well-being of the buildings,” he said.

Wan Mohd Nor urged residents of all PPRs to adhere to fire and safety regulations, including not carrying out illegal renovations that might block emergency exits and walkways.

“In the event of a fire, a blocked exit might hamper rescue efforts.

“The same goes for blocked fire hydrants,” he said.

“The regulations are to ensure the safety of all, thus they should be adhered to,” said Wan Mohd Nor.
