IT was 8am and signboard carver Lee Chee Cheng, 54, was already at work sanding down two thick slabs of Jelutong heartwood outside his shop in Lebuh Carnarvon.

Not far from him, in Lorong Stewart, trishaw maker Saw Chin Choon, 54, had opened his doors and was adding final touches to a red trishaw he was building.
