GEORGE TOWN: A woman was shot dead as she was driving her BMW in Taman Pekaka in Sungai Dua, near here, Tuesday.
The victim, in her 40s, died from gunshot wounds in the chest in the close-range shooting at 5.45pm.
Several bullet holes were found on the window of her car.
After the shooting, the white BMW coasted and crashed into the back of a four-wheel-drive vehicle in Jalan Pekaka 1 before coming to a stop at Lintang Pekaka 9.
A police forensics team is at the scene to investigate the case.
Penang CID chief Senior Asst Comm Zainol Samah said preliminary investigations showed that the 49-year-old woman, whose name was not disclosed, was not a Datin or Datin Seri.
“She was not linked to any gang member and the case has nothing to do with gang activities,” he said when met at the scene.
SAC Zainol said two men on a motorcycle approached the car and the pillion rider opened fire.
“About 10 shots were fired and she was hit six times in the chest," he said.
Her body has been sent to Penang Hospital for a post-mortem.
