Liow: MCA still against Hadi’s Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA continues to voice its concerns over the PAS Private Member’s Bill which makes a return to the Dewan Rakyat this week.

Its president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said that this was because an agreement had been reached during the previous Barisan Nasional supreme council meeting, that any Bill should only be brought to Parliament if it had the consensus of all component parties.

“MCA has voiced out its position, that we are against Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang’s Bill.

“I do not know what he is going to do next. Our position is the same, we do not want this Bill debated,” he said at the Parliament lobby yesterday.

Liow said the Federal Constitution was clear in that “everybody is equal before the law.”

“We cannot have two separate legal systems in Malaysia and for a single offence, have two types of penalty.

“It should not happen in this country. We want clarity and the current system to continue. We should not confuse the public,” Liow said.

On the proposal that a Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) look into Abdul Hadi’s Bill, Liow said that “no matter what, we will provide our feedback.”
