NRD detains 36 over alleged misuse of identity cards

JOHOR BARU: The National Registration Department (NRD) has detained 36 individuals for allegedly using others' identity cards to secure jobs during an integrated operation at a Pasir Gudang factory.

Its deputy director-general (operations), Sarinah Apisah, said the suspects comprised eight men and 28 women, aged 16 to 48, believed to be from the Philippines and Indonesia.

“The department launched Ops Jejak 1.0 to curb the misuse of identification documents, particularly the use of identity cards belonging to others to obtain employment,” she said in a press conference following the operation on Tuesday (Oct 20).

Sarinah said the department conducted a month of intelligence gathering before the operation to track down the suspects.

“A total of 79 personnel from across the country took part in the operation, during which 234 individuals have been inspected.

“Of those inspected, 137 were Malaysian citizens, while 36 individuals were suspected of committing offences involving the use of other people’s identity cards to secure jobs,” she added.

The case is being investigated under Section 25(1)(c) of the National Registration Regulations 1990 (Amendment 2007).

Those detained have been brought to the Johor NRD office for further investigation.
