Malacca Umno letter to Red Shirts withdrawn

KUALA LUMPUR: The planned Red Shirts rally has nothing to do with Umno and the letter issued by the party’s Malacca liaison committee has been withdrawn, said Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (pic).

The Umno secretary-general said the party ordered the withdrawal of the letter which had called for a meeting to coordinate the rally, scheduled for tomorrow.

Tengku Adnan said Umno had not instructed that the letter be sent.

However, the letter has been widely circulated on social media.

“We are not involved. The rally has nothing to do with Umno.

“I told them to withdraw the letter and not to participate in the red or yellow rallies,” he said.

The yellow-themed Bersih rally will also take place that same day.

Asked if disciplinary action will be taken against Umno members taking part in the rallies, Tengku Adnan said: “We are not here to suggest anything. We have advised them not to get involved.

“We will leave Jamal, Maria Chin and whoever participates to the police,” he said, referring to Sungai Besar Umno chief Datuk Seri Jamal Yunos, who is also Red Shirts leader, and Bersih 2.0 chairman Maria Chin Abdullah. He also rubbished claims RM50 would be paid to those who participated in the Red Shirts rally.
