500kg crocodile caught with hair and bones found in its stomach

KUCHING: Another large crocodile over four metres long has been snared by Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) at Sungai Samarahan.

SFC’s swift wildlife action team (SWAT) captured the male crocodile, which measured 4.1m long and weighed 500kg, on Monday morning.

“The crocodile was hooked 200m from the Kampung Pinang jetty. It was cut open and the stomach contents examined.

“Some degraded hair and bones have been found and these will be sent for forensic examination,” SFC said in a statement on Wednesday.

The operation was conducted in response to a crocodile attack on a villager who was reported missing in mid-September.

Last Saturday, SWAT culled a male crocodile measuring 4.4m long and weighing 600kg. Its stomach contents were also found to have some bones and hair, with forensic work to be done to determine whether they were of human origin.

SFC said SWAT would continue to monitor the situation along Sungai Samarahan but would move its culling operation elsewhere for the time being.

It also reminded the public to be vigilant when using the river.
