HIS plan to go backpacking in New Zealand almost came to a screeching halt when he found out he was banned from leaving the country.

And this was because Eng, a freelance photographer, had stopped paying his National Higher Education Fund Corporation (PTPTN) loan, leaving the sum to accumulate to a few thousand ringgit. If he hadn’t checked earlier, the 28-year-old would have been stuck at the airport and booted from his flight in January this year.
