Indonesian jailed two years for having items related to violence

KUALA LUMPUR: A mechanic was jailed two years by the High Court here for possessing a handphone containing images and vi­deos related to violence and mili­­tant groups – Islamic State, al-Qaeda and Mujahideen Indo­nesia Timur.

High Court Judicial Com­mis­sioner Nordin Hassan meted out the sentence against Ihsan, an Indonesian, after he admitted to the charge yesterday.

JC Nordin said having items related to violence was a serious offence in the country.

He said Ihsan, 32, had more than 300 pieces of images and vi­­deos in his possession and the court should take stern action to prevent a recurrence.

Earlier in mitigation, Ihsan’s lawyer Luqman Mazlan said his client came to the country two years ago to work as a mechanic earning RM1,500 a month to support his parents and other siblings in Indonesia.

He said his client was also a first time offender.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Mohamad Mustaffa P Kunyalam, in urging for an appropriate sentence, said the accused was a fo­­reigner and would not show love to this country.

Ihsan was charged with having a handphone containing 165 images and 211 videos related to violence and the militant groups at a rumah kongsi in Kg Parit Abd Rahman in Benut, Pontian, Johor, on Dec 1 last year.
