Fisherman missing after falling from trawler

KOTA TINGGI: A fisherman is missing after falling into the sea while steering his trawler off the south-east coast of Tanjung Leman here, the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency said.

Tanjung Sedili MMEA deputy operations director Maritime Commander Mustafa Kamal Abas said the fisherman has been identified as Chia Swee Lui, 50.

Chia and three others, aged between 45 and 55, went to sea last Thursday.

"The incident is believed to have happened when the victim was steering the trawler boat on Sunday while the others were sleeping.

"When the others realised that Chia was missing, they immediately alerted MMEA at around 4.30pm," he said in a press statement here on Monday.

He said MMEA sent two patrol boats to the scene.

"We started the search and rescue operation at around 5pm but had to stop at 7pm because of limited visibility.

"We continued the search at around 7am Monday," said Commander Mustafa, adding that the operation is still ongoing.
