Search underway for fisherman missing off Pengerang

KOTA TINGGI: A 55-year-old fisherman has gone missing after his boat capsized following a collision with another vessel off Pengerang.

Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said the police were alerted to the incident by the victim’s wife, and the search was jointly mounted by the Pengerang Marine Police Region Two and the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

Preliminary investigations revealed that an unidentified vessel struck the fisherman’s fibre boat, carrying him and a 32-year-old foreign worker, before the boat capsized.

“However, in the incident at around 9.50pm on Sunday (Feb 1), the worker was found safe after clinging to part of the boat,” he said in a statement yesterday, Bernama reported.

Supt Yusof urged local fishermen in the area to assist in the search for the missing man.

“Those with information on the incident are urged to contact the nearest police station, the Kota Tinggi police headquarters operations room at 07-8837222, or Pengerang police station acting chief Sjn Romeo Usit at 011-10182027,” he added.
