Seven injured in explosions at mall

KUALA LUMPUR: Seven people were injured after two restaurants were damaged by explosions at a shopping complex here.

City Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Azizan Ismail said two maintenance workers were conducting tests on the restaurants’ liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) piping features at the time of the incident.

“One of the men was testing at a restaurant at the ground floor, while the other was conducting a similar test at a lower ground floor restaurant when the explosions occurred.

“We were alerted at around 10.21am.

“The two maintenance workers suffered facial burns, while five staff of the ground floor restaurant suffered minor injuries,” he told reporters at the scene on Tuesday.

He said the two men were rushed to the Pantai Medical Centre by members of the public, while the others received outpatient treatment.

Mid Valley Megamall also confirmed that maintenance staff were injured following minor explosions at the complex.

There were no fatalities nor injuries to members of the public, the mall’s management said in a statement.

It added that the incident at two food outlets at the complex occurred while re-instatement work was being carried out on the mall’s liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) system.

“There were minor injuries to our maintenance staff, LPG contractor and tenant staff. Medical treatment is already being given. There were no fatalities, neither were there any injuries to the public.

“We are working with the relevant authorities and have shut all the gas systems in Mid Valley Megamall until further notice,” it said.

It also confirmed that the mall would remain open to visitors.
