KLANG: The Selangor Council of the Royal Court has taken former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik (pic) to task over an outrageous claim that the Selangor Crown Prince had become a Catholic.

In a statement issued by the council's secretary Hanafisah Jais Wednesday, it said that Abdul Rahim should have checked on the authenticity of the post before sharing and commenting on it.

"The council is upset with the irresponsible post by Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik commenting on Tengku Amir Shah's alleged conversion.

"We are truly regretful that he did not bother to check on the original posting beforehand, as it is easy for him to do so should he be more responsible.

Abdul Rahim's comment, it said, was defamatory in nature and could cause hatred amongst Muslims towards the Crown Prince and the Sultan of Selangor.

"We feel that Abdul Rahim's comment towards the fake news was done with dishonest intention to smear and question the Crown Prince's faith as a Muslim, and subsequently claimed that he has converted," it said.

The statement also added that Tengku Amir was currently undergoing training at the elite Sandhurst military academy in Britain and would be serving in the army after his return.

On Monday, Hanafisah and the Selangor Sultan's private secretary Datuk Mohamad Munir Bani lodged two police reports over the Facebook post by a user named "Rahim Tambychik".

Here is the translated statement in full:

The Selangor Council of the Royal Court is saddened over the irresponsible comments made by Tan Sri Rahim Thamby Chik on his Facebook page on Sept 25 about the purported conversion of Raja Muda of Selangor, Tengku Amir Shah.

The Council strongly denies the accusations which are lies and mere slander.

Quoting from his statement: "News of the conversion of the Selangor Raja Muda Tengku Amir

Shah to Catholicism is very sad for Muslims in the whole country and the world.

"This sadness is compounded by the two tragedies involving Muslims in Mecca and Arafah. May the desire of the Selangor Sultan to meet the Pope in Vatican City be fruitful."

After reading the contents of the statement issued by Rahim Thamby Chik, the Council is of the opinion and concluded that it reeked of sedition and slander which can arouse hatred of Muslims towards both the Raja Muda and the Sultan of Selangor.

The Council is perturbed because Rahim Thamby Chik did not take any steps to firstly verify the truth of postings in various other portals before giving his opinions and comments.

It would have been easy for him to check the truth of the information if he had a sense of responsibility.

These postings had gone viral last year and a denial was issued by the Inspector-General of Police in newspapers after a police report was lodged by the palace.

The act of commenting on rumours was a deliberate move and done in bad faith or dishonest intention to discredit and question the faith of the Raja Muda as a Muslim and directly stated the Raja Muda had become an apostate.

As a result of this, there have been public comments made, especially from Muslims who had expressed anger, hatred and insults towards both the Raja Muda and the Selangor of Sultan.

In addition, the fact that he said the Sultan of Selangor would meet the Pope at Vatican City is also clearly a lie and slanderous and should not have been made by a former Chief Minister and deputy minister.

His statements must be stopped to prevent Muslims from believing and spreading lies or slander which could cause them to slip into becoming sinners.

The Council disclosed that the Raja Muda is currently undergoing officer cadet training at the Royal Military Academy

Sandhurst in the United Kingdom.

Upon his return to the country, His Majesty will be commissioned into the Malaysian army.

The Council called on Rahim Thamby Chik to immediately stop spreading false news and these lies.
