KUALA LUMPUR: Activists Adam Adli Abdul Halim and Ahmad Syukri Ab Razab were released after their remand orders were shortened by a High Court on Tuesday.

The two, along with another activist, Mandeep Singh, were arrested on July 31 over a planned rally at Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman. They were remanded until Aug 7 while Mandeep until today.

Adam Adli, 26, Ahmad Syukri, 30, and Mandeep, 29, then applied for a review of the remand order issued by a Magistrate’s court.

Justice Kamardin Hashim dismissed their application, ruling that the remand order was in line with Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code, which allows for detention for more than 24 hours to facilitate police investigation.

However, Justice Kamardin agreed with defence lawyers, N. Surendran and Gobind Singh Deo, saying the reasons given by the investigation officer to request for a six-day remand order were not reasonable.

"Thus I am reducing the remand to four days. As that period ends today, I order that the three be released after the proceedings," said Justice Kamardin.

The courtroom, which was packed with supporters, erupted in cheers following the decision.

The trio were being investigated for alleged involvement in activities detrimental to parliamentary democracy.

On Aug 1, police detained 29 people over a protest rally in front of the Sogo shopping centre.
