KUALA LUMPUR: It is business as usual at Low Yat Plaza on Saturday, as both local and foreign shoppers patronised the shopping mall under the watchful eyes of an increased number of police personnel there.
On Friday, MCA president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said rumours had been circulating about a gathering of non-governmental organisations to take place in front of the mall on Saturday.
Liow said he had called Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar and urged him to ensure the safety of the area and to increase police presence there.
Inspector-General of Police secretariat assistant head (corporate communications) Asst Comm Datin Asmawati Ahmad said there were no signs a gathering would take place, but police have tightened security to prevent any untoward incidents.
"We will continue to strengthen the security for the good of the public," she said.
There are several police checkpoints along the three major roads leading to the plaza, namely Jalan Bulan, Jalan Imbi and Jalan Bukit Bintang as at 5pm Saturday.
There were several Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) vehicles parked in front of a nearby hotel.
Police could be seen stopping vehicles and querying motorists the nature of their visit to the mall.
There were also police officers seen inside the mall, amidst a good number of local and foreign shoppers purchasing electronic goods.
