Don't be caught up in racial, religious extremism, Muhyiddin tells Umno

PETALING JAYA: Umno cannot be caught up in racial and religious extremism, said party deputy president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday.

"Umno's survival depends on how far the rakyat views Umno as a party that can be trusted.

“Therefore, it is mandatory for all Umno members to return and raise Umno's image as a party that can be trusted by the rakyat.

“We have to repair all weaknesses and act to correct the situation before it is too late," said the Deputy Prime Minister in his Umno Day 2015 message ahead of the party's 69th anniversary on Monday.

He added that the rakyat is closely watching Umno's actions and stand on several key issues, especially those linked to interracial relations and national unity.

"The rakyat is looking at what direction Umno will take.

"Will Umno continue to be a progressive and moderate Malay Islamic party or change to become a racist, extremist party.

“I admit there have been attempts at provocation by those who wish to see Umno fall into the traps of racism and extremism.

“But Umno's balanced, moderate stance in managing interracial relations must be defended. We are not a racist party," said Muhyiddin.

He added that Umno was a Malay and Islamic party that benefited everyone.

"Umno defends Malays and Islam, but at the same time, protects the legitimate interests of other races and respects their freedom to practise their religions.

“I believe that as long as we remain on this balanced stance, we will continue to preserve national unity, and Umno will continue to be respected and trusted by Malaysians of different races and religions," said Muhyiddin.

According to him, Umno has to present immediate answers to the problems faced by the rakyat, such as the increasing cost of living.

"We admit that there is a rise in the price of goods and the cost of living caused by several factors, many of which are out of the government's control, and the government is concerned and has come up with policies and programmes designed to lighten the burden of the people.

“I believe there is still more we can do and Umno must champion this cause," said Muhyiddin.

He also addressed the questions concerning the national investment corporation, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

"The rakyat is also placing a higher importance on transparency and competency in administration, and any issue that concerns transparency and administration has to be taken seriously, and problems have to be addressed immediately.

“This includes the 1MDB issue that cannot be allowed to carry on. All issues have to be investigated freely and fairly.

“Umno's image cannot be connected to the 1MDB issue," added Muhyiddin.
