No need to fear POTA if you’re innocent, says Shafie

KUALA LUMPUR: Those who are not involved in terror activities have nothing to fear over the implementation of the Prevention of Terror Act, said Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal.

While speaking to reporters outside parliament on Tuesday, Shafie rubbished accusations that POTA would see the preventive detention of political opposition figures.

"It was quite clearly spelled out by the Home Minister last night that (POTA) has nothing to do with political ideology. Individuals should not be worried as long as they are not involved (in terror activities). If (Pota) is for the good of the country and the people, then everyone should support it," the Semporna MP said.

"POTA is essential for countries like Malayisa. We have seen many countries in the world introduce all sorts of laws to ensure that they do not fall into a chaotic environment. You have seen it in the Middle East and in the United States of America," explained Shafie.

He added that laws such as POTA are necessary to preserve peace.

The Dewan Rakyat passed the Prevention of Terrorism Bill at policy stage on Monday after more than 10 hours of debate.

The measures were taken to deal with the pressing threat of terror entities such as the Islamic State (IS).

The law allows those involved or commissioned to carry out terrorist acts to be detained for years and have their movements restricted.
