Former MP Gobalakrishnan detained over police, drug gangs tweet

GEORGE TOWN: Former Padang Serai MP N. Gobalakrishnan was detained over a tweet about police officers involved with drug gangs.

Gobalakrishnan had arrived at the police headquarters in Patani Road at 3.30pm on Monday to record a statement over his remark. He was detained after his statement was taken.

George Town acting OCPD Supt Abdul Rahman Rahmad said a remand order to detain Gobalakrishnan to assist in the investigations would be obtained from the courts on Tuesday.

Last week, Gobalakrishnan, through his Twitter handle @Ngobalakrishnan wrote: “Some Penang Indian police officers are strongly backing the 04 gang which deals with drugs.”

Earlier, Penang police chief Senior Deputy Comm Datuk Wira Abdul Rahim Hanafi told reporters Gobalakrishnan would be investigated for "intentional insult with the intention to provoke a breach of peace" under Section 504 of the Penal Code.
