Planting the SEEDS in schools to promote environmental issues

PETALING JAYA: A local company will initiate an ecology education programme called SEEDS Malaysia which it hopes will be introduced in schools nationwide.

SEEDS (Sustainable Eco Education Development for Schools) 2014 is the initiative of E-Magineers (M) Sdn Bhd, which will organise a conference at the end of the month with foreign experts to give talks on how to implement the programme.

E-Magineers chief executive officer Abdul Razak Aziz said the theme of the programme is “Towards A Greenprint for Malaysian schools”.

“While our mission is to promote important environmental issues, we also want to create broad-based initiatives and strategies in green sustainability practices throughout Malaysian schools,” said Abdul Razak.

He said the programme was to help schools turn green, to set up school-based edible gardens, and provide a safe and supportive environment where children can explore, play and learn.

“School field trips should include nature exploration to organic farms, permaculture farms and animal farms,” Abdul Razak said yesterday.

He said teachers, parents and everyone who interacted with children should come to SEEDS Malaysia 2014, which will be held at The School, Jaya One, Petaling Jaya, from Oct 31 to Nov 2.

The guest speakers will include sustainability educator from Hawaii Dr Koh Ming Wei, Murujan Permaculture Design company founder Giovanni Galuzza and biodiversity expert Casey Ng.
