KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysian Navy is beefing up its assets and logistics under the “Sea-Basing Concept” to strengthen security off Sabah waters following a spate of kidnappings.
The Sea-Basing Concept involves the placement of navy vessels and personnel, including the creation of a small naval base offshore, that could intercept unknown ships or intruders far from the country’s coastlines, said navy chief Admiral Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Jaafar.
Sea basing would allow national security assets, such as naval ships, to conduct sea operations without relying on shore-based logistical support.
“Our vessels are at sea all the time and they are ready. If we are informed, we are right there to apprehend the intruders,” he told reporters after attending the launch of Navy Innovation Day yesterday.
He said that under the system, strategic areas would be fortified to combat abductions and intrusion.
Deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Bakri Zinin said more personnel and logistics would be deployed to the east coast of Sabah.
He said manpower was being beefed up at seven police stations in the Eastern Sabah Security Zone (Esszone).
