Gambling among pupils prevalent during CNY

SOME 93% of the 600 primary school pupils said in a survey that they have had experience in gambling, reported Sin Chew Daily.

Among them, 98% gambled during Chinese New Year gatherings and the rest at weddings of family members and relatives.

The pupils felt that gambling could help them pass time and make a quick buck.

The study, conducted by the Gamblers Rehab Centre Malaysia, also found that 89% of 5,000 secondary school students surveyed had been involved in gambling.

“Most of them (82%) started gambling with family members, followed by friends, on the Internet and at school,” said the survey.

> The daily also reported that thieves broke into the home of Negri Sembilan Crime Prevention Foundation chairman Datuk Goh Siow Huat on Chinese New Year eve.

The break-in was the fourth, after the earlier ones last year.

Goh, who is former Rasah MP, said he discovered the break-in upon returning to his house in Taman South-East Asia, Seremban, around 10pm after attending his reunion gathering in his hometown.

“I lost valuables worth more than RM10,000,” he said.

Meanwhile, the home of Batu Caves state assemblyman Amirudin Shari was also broken into the same day in Rawang, Selangor.

Amirudin lost a watch, two cellphones and RM500 in the incident.

> Also on the eve of Chinese New Year, a man went on a shooting spree in retaliation against villagers who he suspected had affairs with his wife.

The incident at a village in China’s Yunnan province saw six dead and three injured.

China Press reported that police launched a manhunt for the man, who fled in a jeep.

Initial investigations showed that the man suspected that his wife was having an affair with at least two villagers.

Out of anger, he opened fire at the men and their family members.

It was not known if the two men were among the dead.
