MUAR: Four local fishermen were detained after testing positive for drugs during a joint operation by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the National Anti-Drugs Agency (AADK) in the waters off Tanjung Emas here.
The fishermen, aged between 30 and 39, were detained following preliminary urine screening conducted during the integrated operation from 11pm to 1am on Monday (Nov 2).
Batu Pahat Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Mohammad Zaini Zainal said the operation involved MMEA vessels along with 20 officers from the Johor and Muar AADK offices.
He said six local fishing boats were inspected during the operation.
"Preliminary screening found that three individuals tested positive for methamphetamine, while another tested positive for cannabis.
"All four individuals were handed over to AADK for further action and investigation," he said here on Tuesday (Nov 3).
Mohammad Zaini said further action would be taken by AADK under the relevant provisions of the Drug Dependants (Treatment and Rehabilitation) Act 1983.
He said such integrated operations were important not only to ensure compliance with maritime laws but also to address factors that could affect the safety, judgement and ability of individuals working at sea.
"Drug abuse among those working at sea poses risks not only to the individuals involved but also to their crew members, vessels and other sea users.
"Inter-agency cooperation enables preventive and enforcement measures to be carried out more comprehensively," he said.
MMEA said it would continue strengthening strategic cooperation with relevant enforcement agencies to ensure the country's waters remained safe and free from illegal activities.
