KUALA LUMPUR: Senator Dr Syed Husin Ali has sued Utusan Melayu (M) Berhad and an independent MP for defamation in an article about him published two months ago.
The 76-year-old, who was a former Universiti Malaya professor and former Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) deputy president, filed the suit through his counsel Fadiah Nadwa Fikri at the High Court civil registry here yesterday.
In his statement of claim, Dr Syed Husin named publisher of Utusan Malaysia, its editor-in-chief Datuk Abdul Aziz Ishak and Kulim-Bandar Baharu MP Zulkifli Noordin as defendants.
Dr Syed Husin said the daily, in an article headlined “Zul Noordin nafi dakwaan Syed Hussin” (Zul Noordin denies Syed Husin’s claims) on Nov 20 last year, had falsely published the defamatory words about him.
The politician claimed that Zulkifli had in his personal blog under the title “Anjing-Anjing Pencen” re-published similar words.
He said the words implied that he was guilty of the corrupt practice, is a hypocrite, dishonest and untrustworthy person and that he is unfit to be a politician.
Dr Syed Husin said he has been injured in his character, credit and reputation.
He is seeking for RM10mil in damages, interest, costs and further relief deem fit, and also wants an injunction to restrain the defendants from further publishing the similar libel or slander against him.
