Radzi's career in politics began in 1982

Datuk Seri Mohd Radzi Sheikh Ahmad, 66, was a lawyer before he embarked on a full-time career in politics. He was appointed Umno secretary-general on June 1, 2004. He was also appointed Home Minister during the Cabinet reshuffle in 2006. Prior to that, he was Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Legal Affairs).

He first contested in the 1982 general election, winning the Kangar parliamentary seat. He remained as Kangar MP in the 1986 general election, but fell out with Umno in 1987.

He practised law during his brief retirement from politics. Later, he joined the now-defunct Semangat 46 before rejoining Umno in 1990.

He made a comeback to active politics by winning the Kangar seat in the 2004 general election, after not being picked for the 1990 and 1995 elections. He retained the Kangar seat in the 2008 elections with a 13,671-vote majority.

Radzi, a former state footballer, is now a recreational golfer. He is married to Datin Mahani Abdul Hamid and has three children.
