Kamala made Selangor exco member

Kamala: ‘More leverage to implementprogrammes to help the rakyat’

SHAH ALAM: Sri Andalas assemblyman Kamala Ganapathy has been appointed a Selangor state executive councillor.

She takes over as state Unity and Welfare of Plantation Workers committee chairman, a post previously held by the late Datuk K. Sivalingam.

The second-term assemblyman, 57, is the second woman in the executive council, after Seri Setia representative Datin Paduka Seripah Noli Hussin.

Kamala, also the first woman from the MIC to be appointed a state executive councillor, will take her oath of office at Istana Kayangan on Monday.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohamad Khir Toyo, who announced this yesterday, said her appointment was based on her ability to interact with people and resolving a number of social issues.

“Kamala has the initiative to work and she goes to the ground to resolve issues brought up by the rakyat,” he said.

An MIC member since 1985, she is one of three state assemblymen from the MIC in Selangor.

The other two are Batu Caves representative Datuk V. Thiagarajan and newly elected Ijok state assemblyman K. Parthiban.

Dr Khir said he had wanted more women under his administration.

“Now, we have Seripah Noli and Kamala at the executive level to highlight issues pertaining to women,” he added.

Kamala said the appointment would be a challenge.

“An opportunity like this gives me the leverage to further implement programmes to help the rakyat,” she added.
