Bridge run returns as marathon event

PENANG: After a lapse of two years, the Penang Bridge Run has been revived as the Penang Bridge International Marathon 2006, with The Star as media sponsor.

To be held on July 30, the race is jointly organised by the Malaysian Highway Authority and the Penang municipal council.

The Penang Bridge will be closed from 3am to 9.30am on July 30.

State Tourism Committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said the bridge marathon was a combination of two popular sporting events – the Penang Bridge Run held from 1992 to 2003, and the Penang International Marathon that was last held in 1999.

“These two sporting events had been popular among participants from within the country and also the South-East Asia region,” he said during a meeting yesterday with sponsors of the event.

“We hope the revival of these two in the form of the Penang Bridge International Marathon 2006 will increase the state’s prominence on the sports tourism map.”

Entry forms can be obtained at the municipal council services department at City Stadium in Lorong Kulit (04-226 2959, 226 2953) or MHA office at 7th Mile, Jalan Sultan Azlan Shah (04-657 7911, 657 6292). They can also be downloaded from www.penangmarathon.com.my.

The closing date for entries is June 30.
