Veteran actress Saadiah dies


KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran actress Datin Saadiah died at her house in Taman Melawati here yesterday. She was 68. 

Artistes Association of Malaysia president Datuk Mustapha Maarof said Saadiah was suffering from diabetes and oedema of the lungs, and had not been well for some time. 

Mustapha, who was at her home to pay his last respects, said she died at about 1pm.

He said she would be laid to rest at the Klang Gates Muslim Cemetery here where her husband, Datuk Ahmad Daud, was buried. 

Saadiah, whose real name was Satya Baharom, was born in Singapore on Aug 10, 1936. She was a prima donna of Malay movies during her time. 

She starred in many films including Semerah Padi, Antara Dua Darjat and Musang Berjanggut

In the 1975 film Permintaan Terakhir, she acted with her husband and daughter Fauziah Ahmad Daud.  

Fauziah, when met at the house where a large crowd had gathered, described her mother as perfect.  

“Honest to God, I didn’t expect it (her death) to be so soon,” she said. – Bernama
