Sarawak tycoon dies

SIBU: Datuk Wong Tuong Kwang, one of Sarawak’s richest men and a well-known philanthropist, passed away at the Sibu Medical Specialist Centre here on Wednesday, his family said.  

Wong, 91, left behind a widow, Datin Tiong Lang Ding and six children – sons Datuk Wong Kie Yik, Datuk Wong Kie Nai and Wong Kie Chie as well as daughters Wong Ngo Huong, Hong Houng and Chuo Kee. 

He had more than 50 grandchildren and great grandchildren. 

The late tycoon founded the timber-based WTK Group of Companies, which has diversified into several other ventures, including oil palm plantation, shipping, property development and insurance. 

Wong's family said they would fulfil his wish to donate some RM960,000 to six organisations – Wong Clan Bursary Fund and Foochow memorial building (RM300,000 each), Wong Tuong Kwang kindergarten (RM150,000), Methodist Theological Fund and Chung Cheng primary and secondary schools' fund (RM100,000 each) and the Masland Methodist Church here (RM10,000). 

The late Wong will be buried at the Kwong Yuan Benevolent Society cemetery at Sungai Aup tomorrow.
