Drama troupe to stage ‘Farewell My Concubine’

KUALA LUMPUR: The China Blue Sky Modern Drama Troupe will present the stage show, Farewell My Concubine, at Dewan San Choon, Wisma MCA here tomorrow and on Saturday in conjunction with the 30th anniversary of Malaysia-China diplomatic ties. 

The play, jointly organised by the Chinese Embassy and the Malaysian Chinese Cultural Society, is a story about romance, war and conflict during the war between the Chu and Han states at the end of the Qin dynasty about 2,000 years ago. 

The Star, China Press and Nanyang Siang Pau are the co-organisers of the show. 

Director Wang Xiangming said people who are English-educated, especially those unfamiliar with Chinese history, need not worry that they would not understand the play as it was not about history.

Instead, it is a play that reviews love, wealth, emotions, morality and humanity, he said. 

“These are the issues people are still facing nowadays and I am sure it can be easily understood by the audience with the help of English subtitles,” he said at the Tai Thong Restaurant here yesterday. 

He said the most interesting part of the play was the dialogue between the two heroines, Lu Zhi and Yu Ji, played by Xiao Xiong and Hou Ji Lin respectively.  

Xiao said although she had played the role of Lu Zhi more than 80 times, she still experienced new feelings every time she played the character.
