KUALA LUMPUR: The massive power blackout on Sept 1 affecting five northern states was due to an electrical flashover on the 275KW transmission lines, which resulted in the malfunction of the power system.
Tenaga Nasional Bhd chairman Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin told reporters after the company's annual general meeting the power failure was caused by a series of unexpected events during the maintenance operations.
“Within 31 seconds power was disrupted triggering from Bukit Beruntung (Batu Gajah Line 2) which resulted in the unexpected low voltage in the northern region.
“As a result of the power failure Perak, Penang, Kedah, Perlis and Kelantan were affected and power was restored within four hours,'' he added.
“The Kenyir-Tanah Merah Line 2 tripped because of a malfunction of the power relay system and this was an unanticipated equipment failure.
“The simultaneous occurrence of several factors acting in combination caused the system to experience power supply loss,” Dr Awang Adek said.
He outlined steps taken by Tenaga to minimise future power failures.
