Forest City tightens tenant screening after scam syndicate busts

JOHOR BARU: Forest City management has reiterated its commitment to working closely with the police to stamp out unlawful activities within the development.

In a statement, the master developer said it had zero tolerance for illegal activities within Forest City.

“We work closely with the police and relevant authorities, fully supporting their investigation and enforcement efforts.

“We will also continue to strengthen tenant screening and security measures within the development,” it said.

The statement came after The Star reported on Wednesday (Oct 7) that police had raided at least five apartments in Forest City and arrested 16 people, mainly Chinese nationals, believed to be linked to two scam syndicates operating there.

None of the foreigners had their passports with them.

The suspects, aged in their 20s and 30s, have since been remanded to assist investigations.

The two syndicates were allegedly involved in fake cryptocurrency investment scams targeting Chinese nationals in China.

The suspects are being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, as well as for passport-related offences.
