CAIRO: Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s public lecture to a gathering of international scholars and academia at the Al Azhar University today will be the highlight of his two-day working visit to Egypt.
According to local press reports, the group was keenly anticipating the Prime Minister’s speech on “Muslim Unity in the Face of Challenges,” followed by a two-hour dialogue, especially at this time when the United States and Britain are deploying troops to the Gulf in anticipation of war with Iraq.
“Coming in the wake of Sept 11 and heightening tensions in the Gulf region, Dr Mahathir's views on the situation at this ancient seat of Islamic learning will be closely watched by national and international leaders,” said an Arabic newspaper yesterday.
Dr Mahathir, who arrived here yesterday after a two-day working visit to Lebanon, will meet with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr Atef Muhammad Muhammad Ebeid, and President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak.
