Golden girls reunite

Lifelong bond: CBM Class of 1976 and their teachers coming together to mark the jubilee.

Time may have added silver to their hair, but it has not dimmed the shine of the golden friendship shared by the Convent Bukit Mertajam (CBM) Class of 1976.

More than five decades after leaving school, 60 former Form Five classmates reunited for a Golden Jubilee Reunion Dinner at a hotel in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, on Aug 8.

Many travelled from overseas and across Malaysia for the celebration themed “Glittering Golden Hearts”.

The evening began with warm hugs, laughter and photo-taking as old friends recognised familiar faces.

Retired teachers received a heartfelt welcome and were greeted with loud applause.

Organising committee chair Irene Ewe welcomed the guests before they enjoyed a seven-course dinner.

The most poignant moment came during the “Down Memory Lane” video presentation.

Vintage school photographs flashed across the screen, drawing smiles, cheers and even tears.

Video greetings from former teachers added another surprise.

Among those in attendance was Tan Choon Hong, 90, who served as the school’s assistant principal from 1956 to 1992. She was happy and deeply moved that her “little girls” had blossomed into beautiful, successful women, an Oct 6 press release read.

Former CBM principal Sister Clara Anthony, 86, who led the school from 1973 to 1976, said some of the best years of her teaching career were at the school.

“I am so blessed and joyful that I am still remembered.

“This gathering is an expression of your fidelity, openness and love for your alma mater,” she said.

The ballroom sparkled as guests competed in golden-themed contests, including Most Dazzling Golden-Dressed Woman, Most Golden Accessories, Most Creatively Dressed Woman, and Most Golden Headgear.

Gold glittered everywhere – from hats and handbags to shoes, scarves and jewellery.

Laughter echoed through the hall during interactive games as guests raced to produce golden items within seconds.

The dance floor soon came alive with energetic performances, with guests dancing the night away like carefree teenagers once more.

The reunion ended on an emotional high as everyone joined hands to sing Shalala Lala, If We Hold on Together and Auld Lang Syne.

There were hugs, happy tears and promises not to wait another 50 years before meeting again.

For those present, the evening proved that while five decades may have passed, true friendship never grows old.
