GEORGE TOWN: It's curtains down for two convent schools on the island with SM Convent Pulau Tikus (CPT) and SM Convent Light Street (CLS) closing its doors.

It was the last day for both schools with 40 students and 11 teachers of CPT being the last batch of the long history of the school which was established in 1950.

It was a tearful moment for the students and teachers who attended the official handing over ceremony of the school to its owners Infant Jesus Sisters (IJS).

"We saw all the joyous and sad moments in this school as we always felt like a family here," said CPT principal Khaw Juat Woon on Friday (March 31) who will be heading Convent Bukit Mertajam next month.

The schools stopped taking in new students in 2018 and there were plans to turn them into a private school and higher institution of education.

CLS was founded in 1852 and was the oldest all-girl school in South-East Asia.

The last batch of students from both the schools completed their SPM examinations in March and are waiting for their results.

The primary school of CPT will continue, while at CLS, its primary school will carry on until next year.
