Students who have completed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia examinations, or a diploma programme, are invited to apply for the Rinwood Awards scholarship programme to study at Curtin University Malaysia in Miri, Sarawak.

Encouraging those with good results to apply, Rinwood Pelita Plantation (Mukah) Sdn Bhd education committee chairman Hii Wei Wen said applications will open this month, with details to be announced soon.

Designed to ease financial barriers and empower high-achieving students, particularly those from underprivileged and B40 backgrounds, the Rinwood Awards recognise both academic excellence and financial need.

Hii said the programme reflects Rinwood Pelita Plantation’s long-term investment in Sarawak’s future.

Speaking at the 2025 Rinwood Awards presentation ceremony at the varsity on Dec 11, he added that the scholarship was created to open doors for deserving students, especially those from B40 families, and to give them the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Last year, scholarships worth RM253,000 were awarded to 33 outstanding students from the varsity. Fourteen students received RM10,000 each, nine students were awarded RM7,000 each, and 10 students received RM5,000 each to support their tertiary education.

Finance and management student Eugenia Sim Yu Yang, who was among the recipients, said the financial award has made a meaningful difference in her life.

“This scholarship allows me to pursue my studies without placing a financial burden on my family,” she said, adding that her two siblings, Hubert and Emily, were also recipients of the award.

Having all three siblings supported through this programme means so much to the family, she shared.

Hii noted that the success of the scholarship programme’s first intake in 2024, which supported more than 16 students, has strengthened the company’s confidence in the initiative.

“We are honoured to partner with Curtin Malaysia in nurturing the next generation of Sarawakian leaders,” he said.

Congratulating the recipients, Curtin Malaysia student recruitment and conversion manager Samson Philip said they have all shown exceptional determination and resilience.

“This award is a recognition of your hard work, and we are immensely proud of your achievements,” he said, noting that corporate social responsibility initiatives such as the Rinwood Awards complement the Sarawak government’s efforts, incuding the state’s free tertiary education scheme, by strengthening the talent pipeline and promoting social mobility.
