WITH borders open, international students are making a return to the country.

Last month, the country met its 2022 target of attracting 50,000 new international students to study here.

As of Dec 21, Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) received 50,000 international student applications to study in Malaysian public and private education institutions.

Malaysia is seeing a rising number of students coming from China, Indonesia, Pakistan, Japan and Egypt, a press release from EMGS read.

Established in 2012, EMGS, which is responsible for promoting Malaysia as the international education hub of choice and to position the country as the Top 10 education destination, comes under the purview of the Higher Education Ministry.

It is also the principal body that manages the movement of international students in Malaysia, including facilitating visa processing.

“EMGS will continue to support the government’s aspiration of attracting 250,000 international students by 2025, and promote Malaysia as an international education hub of choice.

“Local and international students and parents can access information about studying in Malaysia through the EMGS ‘Discover Education Malaysia’. “The portal provides comprehensive information on Malaysian higher education institutions, including backgrounds, programmes, fee structures, career paths, student testimonials, as well as informative articles,” the statement read.

According to the QS Best Student Cities Ranking 2023, Kuala Lumpur is among the global top 30 best student cities to live in.

Placed 28th globally, the capital moved up by three spots in the 10th edition of the global ranking, beating cities like Beijing, Los Angeles, Adelaide and Taipei.

Coming in sixth in Asia, Kuala Lumpur is also ranked Asia’s most affordable study destination.
