PETALING JAYA: Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) has dismissed the claim by a news report that it would terminate 600 of its part-time lecturers.
UiTM vice-chancellor Prof Emeritus Datuk Ir Dr Mohd Azraai Kassim in a statement emphasised that the online portal’s report titled “UiTM reassesses 600 part-time lecturers after funding cut" was misinterpreted and caused confusion among various parties.
He said that UiTM’s recruitment of part-time lecturers for each semester is based on the needs of each programme and subject in each faculty. The number varies every semester. Therefore, the report that says UiTM terminated part-time lecturers is inaccurate and deeply regretted, ” he said.
Mohd Azraai added that UiTM's written statement to the news portal also did not touch on issues related to university budget cuts and said that the issue of termination of part-time lecturers was not brought up.
“UiTM works closely with the Higher Education Ministry which is concerned about development and operation of the university. We will continue to support and ensure education continues to be strengthened while facing challenges of new norms, ” he said.
