KUALA LUMPUR: A Malaysian Immigration Department officer was injured after being knocked down by a foreign national during an enforcement operation at an entertainment outlet in Bukit Bintang here on Thursday (Feb 26).
Immigration enforcement director Basri Othman said that during the operation, which began at 3.15am, the officer was believed to have fractured his left leg and the suspect later fled.
“The suspect acted aggressively amid the commotion on the premises’ staircase, causing our officer to fall. The officer was rushed to hospital and is reported to be in stable condition,” he told Bernama on Thursday.
Basri said the operation involved 85 officers and personnel, including 15 from the Special Tactical Team (Pastak), and that 48 of the 98 foreign nationals inspected were arrested for various offences.
Among the offences were overstaying and failing to produce valid identification documents. Those arrested included nationals from Myanmar, Thailand and several African countries.
In addition, Basri said two Nigerian men were detained for allegedly misusing student passes by working as DJs.
“They were found to have committed an offence under Regulation 39(b) of the Immigration Regulations 1963 for breaching the conditions of their passes,” he said.
Basri added that most patrons were in a dazed state, believed to be due to alcohol, when inspections were carried out.
Preliminary investigations also found that the premises used the services of foreign women who accepted bookings and set rates by phone.
All detainees were taken to the Putrajaya Immigration Office for further investigation and action. — Bernama
