Study on road system needed in view of projects

Residents are worried that traffic congestion will worsen in Bandar Utama. — Filepic

RESIDENTS of Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya are concerned about rapid development in this area which is already congested with traffic.

Lebuh Bandar Utama, which is the only access road for BU11 and BU12 residents, is already choked with traffic throughout the day.

It is also the access road for several new residential and commercial developments in the Tropicana area.

If that is not enough, the new MRT line, which was supposed to have one station at Merchant Square, has been shifted to the residential area of Bandar Utama.

To make things worse, a high-rise office tower is being constructed in addition to this MRT station.

Residents of Bandar Utama, consisting of some 1,000 households, have only one entrance to this residential area.

So far there is no news as to where the access road to the Bandar Utama MRT station and the office tower will be.

To compound the problem, the Bandar Utama MRT station being so close to the residential area will lead to parking problems.

Those using the MRT may choose to park “free of charge” at the residential area rather than pay for parking at the designated bays provided.

To top it off, we are now told that the earlier highway known as Kidex is now being revived under a new entity.

This highway will run from Bandar Utama to other parts of Petaling Jaya.

Years ago, residents protested about this new highway and the project was scrapped.

It should also be noted that Bandar Utama residents had objected to the office tower development which was supposed to consist of a low-rise commercial building minus the MRT.

This project was then put on hold.

Now suddenly we learn that this “low-rise” has become a “high-rise” project with about 40 storeys.

Have any traffic studies been done to gauge the capacity of the present road system to sustain additional traffic?

The residents of Bandar Utama have not been given sufficient time and space to study this proposal and raise their objections.

If this project moves ahead there will definitely be parking and security issues in the housing area.

I strongly suggest the authorities relook this project and shift the MRT station back to Merchant Square.
