Rebuilding aid falls short

It has come to our attention that there are discrepancies in the rebuilding assistance provided to residents affected by the gas pipeline explosion at Putra Heights in Subang Jaya, Selangor.

There appears to be a significant divergence between the initial commitments made and the actual support delivered, which requires clarification from the relevant authorities.

According to reports from affected residents, there was a clear initial commitment for each household to receive a new home valued at RM300,000, inclusive of furniture.

However, upon delivery, it has come to light that the homes provided are valued at approximately RM75,000 and do not include the furnishings or specifications originally promised.

This substantial reduction in support understandably raises questions among the affected families.

Selangor MCA Liaison Committee wishes to inquire from Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) and the Selangor government the reasons for the change in the housing specifications and the allocation of the associated funds.

A clarification is needed for transparency in this process.

Furthermore, some of the delivered homes lack basic amenities such as consistent electricity and water supplies. And certain support funds, including a previously announced rental assistance, may not have reached all eligible residents.

These practical issues require urgent attention to ensure the welfare of the affected families.

On broader recovery efforts, it is noted that substantial federal funds were allocated for reconstruction.

The public would benefit from an open explanation of how these funds have been utilised, ensuring they have been directed appropriately to those in need.

Lastly, we understand an independent committee was established to review the technical report on the gas pipeline blast and that its findings were anticipated by the end of November.

An update on the status of this report would be appreciated, as its timely release is important for understanding the incident and implementing any necessary improvements.

In the spirit of constructive dialogue and accountability, we believe open communication from the authorities on these points will help address the concerns of the affected residents.
