FOR young scouts in Gombak, Selangor, an outdoor camp was more than just for fun – it was a chance to build confidence and learn life skills.

A total of 114 boys aged 10 and above, from 31 primary and secondary schools that offer the Special Education Integration Programme, participated in the district’s second Agoonoree programme.

The specialised camp provides space for special needs students to learn skills, participate in outdoor activities and build self-confidence in an organised, safe and inclusive environment.

The two-day camp at Taman Rimba Bukit Lagong, Batu Caves, was organised by Gombak District Education Office’s (PPD) Special Education Unit and Selayang Municipal Council (MPS), alongside SJK (C) Selayang Baru and Malaysian Scouts Gombak District.

The youngsters took part in activities such as jungle trekking, treasure hunt, eco craft, cooking competition, flying fox and obstacle course.

They were also demonstrations on firefighting and rescue equipment, first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

“In addition to providing exposure to scouting skills, the programme aimed to develop participants’ social skills and character by teaching them discipline, responsibility and independence,” said camp commander Jefri Zain Supangat.

“It is also an opportunity for them to enjoy experiential learning in nature and to make new friends outside their normal school circle,” he said, adding that the Agoonoree was the first camping experience for the special needs students.

Jefri Zain also credited the accompanying teachers from each school for their dedication and commitment in caring for their young charges and providing positive motivation.

“We would like to make it a regular event to encourage more students with special educational needs to join,” said Jefri Zain.

“The Gombak District Agoonoree was first held in 2019.

“This year marks our second, but the first organised with MPS, and we are hopeful of continuing this collaboration.”

He said the Taman Rimba Bukit Lagong campsite was suitable and safe.

“However, the participants might have been overwhelmed by two days packed with so many activities.

“We will conduct a post-mortem and consider having a three- or four-day camp in the future,” added Jefri Zain.

MPS Community Development Department director Ahmad Fauzi Ishak said the collaboration was the council’s way of showing support by providing a space for students with special educational needs to enjoy these experiences.

“The important thing is the value and experience each participant takes home after the Agoonoree ends.

“A local authority plays a role in building a community that is prosperous, inclusive, caring and has opportunities to grow.”

He welcomed the possibility of the council being a long-term partner for future editions of the Agoonoree programme.

Present at the event were Gombak PPD deputy district education officer Ahmad Fadli Abd Aziz, Gombak District Scout commissioner Mohd Faizullah Buyong, MPS councillor U Chin Ong and SJK (C) Selayang Baru headmistress Chua Hooi Beng, whose school served as the Agoonoree administrator.
